Badlands, South Dakota

The Badlands were AMAZING!  Like you were on another planet! This is one of the stops we made last summer.  We actually went there two days in a row, it is so large, and we still didn't see everything...but it's one of the coolest places I have ever been!

This was our first stop, you see Christian walking out to the end.  We were pretty high up.

At our second stop, you were able to climb down among the deposits, and so Christian did..and got stuck.  He couldn't figure out how to get back up.

He finally found a way back up, but was tired.....it was very hot there....

We drove toward the end of the Badlands, because I wanted to see if the bison were around.  We didn't see them on the first day, but we did see mountain goats...

The next day, we went back and we saw some bison

They didn't come too close to the road, but it was cool to see them!

Here are some random shots..

It's one of the coolest places I have ever been....I'm a big fan of science fiction movies, and I could so see this as a set of another planet.

Crapitty Crap!

That would be the needle separating from the cord!  As I am going in for another surgery today, no time to run up to my LYS and exchange it....I was FINALLY moving along nicely on the lace part of the secret project...I have been 2 stitches short...and had tinked back 3 rows.....and finally had it working.....

Crapitty crap!

Score!

Being stuck home this week, I've watched a lot of the World Cup....watching yesterday's game of Croatia and Cameroon, I was rooting for Croatia...and I know many people will talk about the fact that the Cameroon player got a red card and gave Croatia an advantage...but they still played hard and they won!

I went to Croatia in December of 1986 and stayed until March of 1987.  We had hosted an exchange student the previous school year and I put off college and went to visit her family.  It was a fantastic experience!

At the time, Croatia was still part of Yugoslavia, they were about 5 years away from the civil war that tore the country apart.  It was no surprise when it happened....there was a lot of ethnic talk when I was there....

Vladimira's family was Communist, and I had to register with the local police department. But the country itself was Socialist and they got very upset if you said they were a Communist country.

Since I was there in the middle of winter, we didn't travel too much....We did go up into the mountains to a restaurant.  I remember it was very cool...they had these HUGE wine casks that they had turned into rooms that you could rent.

Vladimira was in school, and I went to the University in Zagreb with her a few times.

I don't have too many pictures, but here is a blurry one of the two of us...we are at the cafe-bar that we frequented...
Look at the 80's perm on me!  And the big frame glasses!  Woo-hoo! I still have that scarf, I bought it at an open air market in the middle of Zagreb with a headband....so it's also Throw-back Thursday!

Yarn Along

Wow haven't done one is awhile....

I am working on my Vanilla Latte Socks in Knit-One, Crochet Two Ty-Dy...I LOVE this yarn!  It is soft, and squooshy!  These socks are going to be awesome-sauce!

I love the colors....just in love with these...and I think it's bringing back my sock knitting obsession!

The other thing I've been working on is a secret....

Reading..I've done a fair bit while being home recuperating...I finished Red Sea, Island of Lost Girls, and Bossypants...I am now reading From Notting Hill with Love..Actually...a definite "summer" read.

See what others are doing...

YOP #24

So this week, I was not feeling great...and Friday night ended up in the ER..and was admitted....I had the first of 2 possible surgeries on Saturday morning....I am feeling better, but it'll take a couple weeks for everything to clear up...so I have not done much crafting....but I am done with the school year......the school year ends on June 20, but doctor's orders, I'm done this year....so maybe I can work on some stuff this week, as I heal....

Gloves of Win

I love these gloves and have now made them twice, both times for swaps...I need to make myself a pair....I don't think the pattern is available any longer, but luckily, I had printed it out...

The yarn is Mad Color Verity in Tempest...I also love the color...and Verity is my go to superwash yarn.

Not much else going on...one more week of school....then cleaning the house and knitting, before I leave to visit the Moms...just booked my flight....the Hubs is staying home....but he now has a passport, so yeah!  Trip to Canada later this summer!....

Joining in with Fiber Arts Friday, the others don't seem to have their links up yet...

Lost in the Wiki

Do you ever get lost in Wikipedia? I know it is not always the most reliable resource, but it is fun to read and easy to get lost.....it's all those little blue links....

Like tonight....I'm watching Henry the VIII and His Six Wives, a BBC movie....well they are on Catherine Howard....now I didn't know much about her, so I looked her up....and then I was reading about Thomas Culpepper and Jane Boleyn.....

When I was younger, we had a full set of encyclopedias.....you know the kind...a traveling salesman came to the door...and gave you a free one....and you needed the rest of the alphabet.....and your parents spent months paying off the set.....

When we would watch TV, and I had a question, my dad would say, go look it up in the encyclopedia....and I would.....

Wikipedia is now my encyclopedia.....the source may have changed, but the quest for knowledge and information has not.....

YOP: #23

Not much has changed this past week from last week.  I've had a busy week...watching some previous students play in the state tournament for softball (they got creamed..they are seated 29, the team they played is 2) But they made it to the tournament!  A young cousin was severely burned on his leg from an accident, so went to visit him in the burn unit..which is about an hour away...sprained my foot...had two parties yesterday....so today I plan on sitting down, elevating the foot and getting some crafting in...I just realized I have another swap gift due to go out the 20th and I haven't started a thing!  So that needs to get done today...as another busy week is ahead of me....I thought I had time between the end of school and when it needed to be shipped...nope..it's the same day!

I did start my Garden Path Shawl
And the pair of socks

and worked a few rows on my other swap gift...but that is about it...

Massachusettes Sheep and Wool

Memorial Day weekend was the Mass Sheep and Wool.  It was suppose to be rainy in the morning and then clear up.  By the time I got there, about 10:30, it was beautiful and the sheep were loud!

It was mainly two sheep....this Tunis
and this, it might have been a Southdown
They were baaing back and forth, with one of the other sheep joining in...but they were the two main ones!  I wish I had taken a video!

This fellow was awfully fluffy...
And this one loved being scratched..
And, of course I went in search of the Jacobs....there was a whole stall of them, but every time you pointed a camera at the ram, it turned it's head...camera shy!

But you ask...what did I get?  Seriously I was looking for swap stuff...but didn't get any....
I think because it was grey in the sky, I went for the yellow!  The really bright yellow is a BFL by Jan Marek Raczkowski.  He is a local CT dyer whom I've seen at many shows over the years, but have never bought...I loved how bright this yellow was...I'm thinking a Honey Cowl...He doesn't seem to have a website.

To the left is a duller, mustardy yellow...it is another new to me dyer, Deep Water Dye Works, it's SHINY in Simon's Vest...yes a Firefly reference....

Must be in reference to this vest
My goodness, that boy is so pretty...ahem..back to the yarn...the yarn has dark coppery stellina in it...so it is shiny....

Then to the left of that yarn is a Holiday Yarn in Packers...I'm planning on making a Strandwanderer with it...she dyes the yarn to get that effect....and Packers are the Hubs favorite team.

Way over to the right is another Holiday Yarn called Captain Jack....cuz we all need some Captain Jack in our lives....another very pretty boy...with a great voice...
You know, I didn't ask, it could be Captain Jack Sparrow....but I'm gonna go with this Captain Jack!

Across the top would be a fun colorway, Purple People Eater, from Spunky Eclectic...love this colorway!

And that was my day...I didn't even stop at WEBS on the way home...I go right by it, but I was restrained....

YOP 22

Nerd Wars started today...and I cast on something new.....never mind that I have 4 shawls on the needles..I cast on the Garter Path Shawl, it'll be the first pattern I've done by charts....I like the written instructions...my brain doesn't work well with charts....also a friend has a sock KAL going on, so I joined that...I'm going to do the Vanilla Latte socks...yeah I know I have 5 pair of socks begun...
And I'll be starting a tablet tote.

We have 15 days left of school...and I am piling on the projects...I'll have a ton of projects on the needles...but I just talked to the Hubs about going to spend some time with my Mom in Florida....he's going to be really busy at the end of June through the beginning of July...so I think I'll go and see my Mom....so I'll need to bring a bunch with me....and since I'll be there at the start of the second month of Nerd Wars, I'll need to bring something with me to start....or head to that yarn store in Tampa I visited the last time I was there....

But I also moved two things to my completed list...and I am trying to use my stash and my queue....
