Play Ball! Or Just Eat!

I spent today here…with lots of kids….the minor league team in the town where I teach gives free tickets on one day for grades 3-8.  They are the grades that have to take The Connecticut Mastery Test (CMT). 

This year it was the Friday before Spring Break…and I am so ready for Spring Break…

Mostly the kids don’t watch the game, but go up and down going to the bathroom, visiting, getting food.  We used to have a no getting concession food rule, but the Superintendent said we had to let them, because the park was losing money giving us the tickets and we weren’t spending any money…So now I let my kids go once, but many other teachers just let them go and go….lots of wandering kids….

But all in all it is a fun day…we ended up in the shade this year and it was cold…brrr….luckily I had on some hand crochet (doesn’t sound as nice as handknit, not the same ring, but there you have it!)

And I’m ready for my nine days off!  I even managed to get most of my lesson planning done at school!  So didn’t bring any of that home, but will have to do some correcting…

Just Tired This Week….

This was the back of the building when I pulled in this morning to school.

This was across the street, in front of the building.  Luckily the clouds went away and it turned into a nice breezy day! 

I have been extremely exhausted this week and I can’t wait for vacation next week.  Even if I just sit in my house and do nothing….of course, at some point I will have to do some lesson planning and correcting…but let’s not think about that….

Let’s think about the yarn crawl over the weekend and spending time with the Hubs, and fresh seafood (for him, not me) and maybe heading down to the Aquarium one day with the niece sidekick…and there will be spring cleaning going on, but mostly it’s going to be reading, crocheting, knitting and sleeping and just relaxing……I so need it right now…

But, we need to get through tomorrow first!  And that will be spent at a baseball game! Yeah!

An Exciting End

Three teachers and a substitute trying to get 400 students out of the gym, remaining in the bus line, in some kind of order…..

Yeah the end of my day was exciting…how was yours?

Plus I kept thinking it was Wednesday all day, damn, but it was only Tuesday

Next week is spring break…it can’t come soon enough!  Plus I’m going yarn crawling on Saturday…oh the anticipation!

Since I need to pay taxes this week, I do have to restrain myself…but I’m hoping to maybe find some Quince and Co…and maybe another local or indi dyer…

My Life In Sports!

Well the excitement of the NCAA has passed, and again a UCONN team has won the championship.  One of the teams, the men or the women have been in the running, or won,  the past couple of years…and in 2004, both teams won!  This is the season known as March Madness.  Although I don’t follow it, you can’t help but be swept up and proud of a school in your state doing so well!

So now it’s onto baseball! Baseball is also a sport I don’t follow, but I know a lot about it…My whole family follows baseball and I grew up on the game.  My brother has played since he was about 5, on various teams.  My dad and stepdad both coached at times and my stepdad was a well respected umpire and director of the Pony league.

Now the town I teach in has a minor league team.  Every year they give free tickets to the 3rd through 8th grades for a game.  We all go together.  It’s a lot of fun.  However many of my students don’t know that much about baseball, so I like to do a unit on baseball.

So, here is my brother talking to my class on Friday about baseball.

And the question I face EVERY year, do I like the Red Sox or the Yankees?  Our state is pretty split, as we are between those two “giants” of the game.  I don’t follow baseball, but if I had to choose, it would be the Red Sox….I hear the cheers and the boos out there..

Crochet

There seemed to be lots of crochet posts today.  It surprised me.  Most of the blogs that I read seem to be “knitting” blogs.  Just meaning that their main craft is knitting, so it was nice to read about their explorations into crochet.

I love crocheting and it was actually my bestest bud, Deidre, who got me back into it….How?  She got preggers!  I decided I wanted to make something for the baby.  So I bought some hooks and a couple of books and some nice scratchy acrylic yarn in fun colors and retaught myself.  I still owe Aiden a larger blanket.  He picked out the yarn awhile ago…

So today after dealing with the state IRS (not so bad) and then having no internet for 4 hours, and figuring it out myself while on the phone with the company, well it was nice to see the appreciation of crochet.

It’s often considered the ugly stepchild of the craft world…and yes there are some hideous things out there!  There is no need for a doll to sit on top of my extra rolls of toilet paper (shudder!), but some really beautiful and fun things, too!

Now I’m having yarn cravings again and that is no good!  Next weekend is the Rhody yarn crawl and the beginning of April break!!!  So I will be heading out there for a day or two (we may make a weekend of it – I really want to stay somewhere with an ocean view)  Then at the end of the month is the Connecticut Sheep and Wool Festival.  This was my first festival and although small, I enjoy going every year.  besides I found my favorite independent soap maker there!  So I am anticipating spending some money, but not a bunch….Then there is the I-91 Crawl in June. 

Hmmm the prospects of the yarn fumes are just so tempting…think I need to go smoosh some yummy yarn!

Field Trip!

Today we went to watch the Young People’s Symphony.  I wasn’t sure how it would be, as we sometimes have an assembly with some symphony people that is MIND-NUMBING!

However I got very excited when they played the Harry Potter theme and then the conductor said even though it wasn’t in the program, they were going to play John Williams most famous theme.  I’m loudly saying to my students, “It’s Jaws or Star Wars, Jaws or Star Wars!!!”  (My students have come to expect the GEEK in me in these situations! Hey I was the only teacher enjoying it, moving to the music, humming along, etc)
