There has been a crochet -vs- knit debate for years....in fact, as a crocheter, I chose not to learn to knit for a very long time. I felt that crochet was not given it's due....eventually I got sucked into knitting because of socks...and the crochet -vs- knit debate seemed to have settled down...crochet was gaining respect....people could see the use of both crafts....many knit designs called for crochet edgings....it seemed like crochet had finally reached what seemed like an equal footing with knitting....
and then BAM! I was thrown back into the debate....at Stitches East, someone came into the booth and asked how a certain yarn would look knit up....I happened to be using that yarn, but I was crocheting...and I mentioned it....
and she said, "Let me rephrase that, how does this look KNIT up?" and she pretty much dismissed me and the crochet....and I got pretty pissed....I did not confront her, because it was not my place, as I was helping a friend out....but man I did feel like being really snotty back to her.....
now obviously knit and crochet create different fabrics....but the way a variegated yarn looks in a knit versus crochet stitch, I figured was not too different...so I decided to experiment....
My Age of Brass and Steam, where I used Madelinetosh merino light in Steam Age...
And a crocheted swatch
And the two together
Now to me, there doesn't seem to be too much of a difference. The crocheted version looks a tad darker, but they were both taken in the same light..some natural and a lamp.....
The stitches were the most basic..the knit stitch and the single crochet....so yes with different stitches, cables, etc..the patterning of the yarn will be different...but that would also happen if you changed stitches in knit...or changed stitches in crochet...
But, at least, she could have seen how the colors pool or work up...I'm not saying it would have been exact, but it would still give you an idea...and to just dismiss it out of hand....well is rude...especially to do it to someone's face....
As Stephanie Tanner would say....

My Dad
If you have read my blog this year, you know that my dad passed away in July. Today would be his 63rd birthday.....
My dad was born December 16, 1950 to Francis Jessie and Beverly Scoville in NY. He was the first of their 4 children, Frank Jr was next, then Melody and Kelly. My grandmother had two daughters from previous relationships (well 3, but one was given up for adoption) Kathy and Toni (who we called Biddy, at the time).
My grandfather left the family and my grandmother took the kids and moved back to Connecticut...where my dad met my mom in high school. They got pregnant and married....I came along...
And eventually my brother, Michael. From 1969-1970, my father served a tour in Vietnam....my mom said he came back a changed man.
We spent about two years living in Germany, while my father finished up his Army service.
My parents marriage lasted until I was 10. My father had a lot of demons. He grew up with an abusive father, Vietnam really messed him up...and he gave in to the alcohol and drugs. Although he was not always the most reliable father, he did try...he was there for all the big events in our lives.
He did have another son, Jason, but unfortunately he did not spend much time with Jason, so they did not really have a relationship.
Eventually he moved to New Jersey....and then he went on the road with a carnival. He really enjoyed the road and traveling. I spent a summer out with him traveling and working, as did my brother. I think this was good for us, as we were both in our late teens and it let us develop a more mature relationship with him.
He got remarried again to Joanne, whom he met on the carnival. They lived for awhile in Ohio, then he left. That was him. Sometimes he would just up and disappear.
I was his "best man"
Eventually he ended up in Texas, living with his mom and sisters and their kids. And that is where he remained. He had a couple of good jobs, but then he lost the one he held for about 10 years...then I think when his mom died in March 2013, he just kinda gave up. We had not spoken in about a year. He had come to visit us in Connecticut about 3 years ago, after he got better from being in the ICU..and then he left and we didn't hear from him. Eventually I got a birthday card....and then nothing for a very long while. Then we spoke on Facebook a couple of times...and then he disappeared again.....And we got the call to go to Texas this July....
My dad was many things and fought many demons in his life....but he also shaped who I am today...and I'm a pretty good person....he also took me to my first sci-fi convention, Star Trek, of course...and instilled in me a love for movies, music, books and sci-fi...He told funny stories and he liked to dance. He also instilled in my brother a lifelong fear of the ocean and sharks...he took him to see Jaws when he was about 5. And the funniest story he told was about my brother, and a tent...People who knew him thought he was a fun guy...and he was....he is missed.
Some pictures of him...
This is at my aunt's house in Brooklyn.
On the carnival, at night, winding down, I love this picture of him dancing with Erica.

YOP: Week 50
First major snowstorm of the year...
Just to give you an idea of how much snow fell....I took this from the backdoor, so I didn't have to go out...it's not a ton, but it's quite a bit...we were predicted to get 6-8 inches...
The Hubs kept the bird feeder full and we had lots of guests during the day yesterday...
At one time, we probably had over 50 birds flocking in our backyard...this was during the snowfall yesterday...he had to fill it back up about 2:00....
I worked on the Creekbed for awhile, got two more rows done....and then hats..I worked on hats...I have 5/17 done for my students...I figure I can get 2 or 3 done today...they are basic simple crochet beanies...I add flowers to the girls....but the boys have requested black and white and Yankee colors...
The two newest recipients came the past week and were given their Minion hats...
Their moms are cousins...
This is my last week of work before the holidays...and it's possible I won't have to go back until Jan 7. The BOE is voting on changing the calendar...right now we go back Jan 2, but we have Jan 6 off for 3 Kings Day..so we are back in school for 2 days and then off again for 3 days....there will be NOTHING done in those 2 days...it'll take a day to get them settled back into a school routine...and then they'll be all hyped up for a three day weekend and 3 Kings Day.....so at Monday's meeting they are voting on changing it...we just hope they take away the weird two days off we were given in May, instead of adding on to the end of the year...we have no a/c in our part of the building..and it gets melting in our seats hot in the classroom....
So now I am off to eat breakfast and work on some hats....wish me luck! At least this time it is not scarves..I did that one year, but I had many, many more children.....and some of them didn't get theirs until close to spring...
Here are two of them...they are now in high school...this was third grade (I think..I had them for 2cd and 3rd grade, as I looped that year)
I also frogged my Bag Hat to use the yarn for student hats...I knew I'd never wear the hat..I might have worn the cowl....but decided I wanted the yarn...
Also frogged the cowl I started with unknown yarn from a student to use for the hats...

Stash Saturday - Yarn Tasting
Have you ever been to a yarn tasting event? I've been to a couple of smaller ones....and many events will feature a form a yarn tasting....but I ran across these last week...and well they are a brilliant way to promote their yarns...I have been a=using a lot of Madelintosh lately, and realized I didn't have to many of her greens...so I ordered Mojito Mint Green....and oh boy I can't wait to try these! I'm thinking a chevron cowl.....or even a plain stripey one...
It comes with a trial Biscotti (not my favorite) and some yummy mint green tea...
I am loving these colors....

Yarn Along..and a few WIPs
~ Two of my favorite things are knitting and reading, and the evidence
of this often shows up in my photographs. I love seeing what other
people are knitting and reading as well. So, what are you knitting or
crocheting right now? What are you reading?~
I have mainly been working on two projects this week....The Scarf, started on the night of the Doctor Who 50th Anniversary....and my Creekbed.....my Creekbed is so messed up, but I'm going with it...it's going to be a wonky scarf for sure....but I know I'll enjoy it....what a difference these two projects are! The yarn, the amount of stitches....but still they both are going to take me forever!!!!
I've also been reading Chickens in the Road by Suzanne McMinn. I don't know how long I've been reading her blog, but it's been a couple of years...she is very funny...so I bought her book when it came out earlier this year....it's not just rehashed blog posts, there are things that she did post about, but written in a different way...and lots of stuff she didn't write about.....
Pretty much all school districts around us had a snow day today...we did not...but I had a personal day...I had to go to Social Security to bring them my father's death certificate and do some paperwork for them....
But I also enjoyed seeing the birds flocking to our driveway...the Hubs feeds the birds in winter...he has a bird feeder, but also sprinkles it on the ground..
This was while it as still snowing....and later...the cardinals came out...
The female is in the upper left and male bottom right...we actually had about 6 cardinals, but they were spread out...and the Hubs had shoveled at this point...
The Hubs also made yummy chocolate, chocolate cookies for dessert....
They look burnt...but were so good!!!! I only ate one....and will be bringing the rest to share tomorrow at lunch....
Joining up with Ginny and Tami....no links up yet

YOP: Week #49
After the desire to CRAFT ALL THE THINGS of the past two weeks...this week I slowed waaayyy down....I started and finished one student hat, and started two others, but ran out of yarn....I worked on my Creekbed for a bit on Wednesday when I was home sick, but mostly I slept....and Saturday I worked on The Scarf....it is longer than a foot (12 inches) now.....oh and I also received a picture from a friend...made her baby a hat awhile ago and it finally fit....
It's the Noodle hat I completed on March 24....isn't she beautiful?
I did cast on for something for my swap partner, but then realized I'd used the cast-on tail, so I have to tink it back...I put it aside and then got an email that she was dropping out of the swap...since I had not sent my package yet, I just told them to take me out of the swap too...
I don't craft many Christmas gifts...I do have the hat for my Mom and I'll make a big cushy cowl for my friend...she loves cowls and wears them all the time...
