YOP #48

Well it is almost to the end of my year....and I'll soon be taking stock of what I've done....as my Friday post showed, I've finished up a few things....

I also started one of the patterns I bought during the indie sale...I am in love with the Snowy Woods Cowl...and I needed to start it! I am using Nerd Girl Random Fandom This Shark, hence my project name Shark in the Woods..  It's got a bit of a sparkle to it....the pattern calls for Aran and it's DK, so I'm hoping it'll turn out okay...it should as I am such a loose knitter....
I'm thinking of starting another pair of socks, my Hey Have I Ever Steered You Wrong?, because Bernard and Christmas....I bought the kit, but I've only ever done one pair of toe-up socks....but hey, if I can do cables on the cowl, I can master toe-up!

I also need to add an edge to the yellow pompom hat...it fits, but is slightly big, so I'm going to add a crocheted edging to it....

I went to NYC on Friday and did a mini yarn crawl...two stores in Brooklyn and two stores in Manhatten..I'll be doing a post on them soon....lots of goodies....including a new Zauberball that needs to be cast on NOW!  while on the bus to NYC, I did work on   'Tis the Season, but ended up frogging a good bit of it for a missed end stitch..bah-humbug!  But I do want to finish that up too...

I have been sick again for about a week or so...since about last Saturday....I think it is finally leaving, but this Saturday I spent the day not doing much...watching an America's Next Top Model marathon and taping a Vikings marathon and taking naps....today I'll tape and watch The Walking Dead marathon starting at 2....I'll probably work on some things today too....

what have you been up to?  Join us on Ravelry...

I've Been Busy

So today I will be heading into NYC for the day...I'm actually planning on hitting up some yarn stores in Brooklyn...I'll let you know how that goes....

This week I worked on finishing some things....

I've been working on this cotton wrap/cowl for a long time..it was very splitty cotton that was hard on the hands...but I finally finished it...

I probably won't wear it now until closer to spring....but am glad it is done....

Then I finished my Outlander inspired cowl...I started this one for a swap, but didn't like how it was turning out in this yarn, so did it in a different yarn for my partner...but decided to finish this...

I like how it ended up...although you can't tell, because Betty (I'm calling her that now) does not have shoulders to hold it up properly...it folds over more....

A couple weeks ago, I decided I needed a yellow pompom hat...well here is mine....finished the pompom on Thursday morning...

And finally my swap partner really likes fingerless gloves...so I made a pair that were inspired by Mrs. Fitz from Outlander...
I really, really like these...am going to make myself a pair.....

So what have you finished this week?

Join up with ChrisKnits, Wisdom in Wonder, and Creative Friday.....

Happy Thanksgiving!

To me, Thanksgiving will always mean Aunt Kathy's house.....

Someone would come in and wake each of the kids between 4 and 5 in the morning.  We'd all get ready to go...some years it was all of us, some years, just my brother and I.... Then we would pile into one or two cars, arguing over who sits where....and drive to Brooklyn, New York.....most of us would fall asleep on the two hour trip.....hunt for parking once we got to Brooklyn and walk to Aunt Kathy's house on Wogan Terrace in Bay Ridge....

Knock on the door, ring the bell and wake everyone in the house up....Aunt Kathy would make a HUGE breakfast for us, as we sat around the dining room and living room catching up....They had a small kitchen in the townhouse, so it was hard for more than one or two people to be in it....

After breakfast, we'd walk up the block and catch the train "into the city" (Manhatten)....we'd find a spot to watch the parade....and freeze while we waited...and hoped not to have to go to the bathroom, because they were hard to find!!

Aunt Kathy had stayed behind, sometimes others would too....Tracy and Debby didn't always go to the parade with us....and I don't remember if Billy did.....

When the parade was over, we'd head back to the train with the masses of people.....and take the R train back to Brooklyn....last stop.....

We'd sit around, watch the games (not me, I usually had a book) or play with Debby and Tracy....

Then we'd eat, sit around some more, eat some more....and eventually we'd have to leave.....and we'd pile back in our car(s) and head back to Connecticut....

We did this almost every year until about 1985, then my brother and I were in high school and we wanted to watch the Turkey Day game against the rival school.....and dad wasn't always around at this point....

we went a couple of more times before they sold the townhouse and moved to Florida....

but Thanksgiving will always mean Aunt Kathy's house....

Not sure when these pictures were taken or even if they were from a Thanksgiving, but I think they are....

Stitch Along Wednesday

I was hoping for a snow day, but not gonna happen..so I 'm going to have to fight getting home in the mess that will be our roads this afternoon....but here goes the crafting news...

I have finished two more WIPs...yeah me!!!!!

And a couple week ago I decided I needed a yellow hat with a big pompom and Monday night I started one....I also pulled out a crocheted scarf/wrap I am working on in Done Roving's Chrsitmas Castus...

I also worked on another pair of socks, finishing the first sock....

Here is the hat and the scarf....

I've also decided, since I need to adjust my socks...I should really read some of the many sock books I own...so this first one I pulled out is The Knitter's Book of Socks by Clara Parkes...

What have you worked on this week? Please link up with us.....

YOP #47

This has been a productive week! On Saturday I reconnected with a friend through Facebook.  Well here's the deal...when I was in high school I had penpals, lots of them, around 30...mostly in other countries and a few in the States...this friend is one of my penpals...I have never met her, but we have been writing to each other since about 1983-1984!  She is the only one I am still in touch with...her name is Tone and she lives in Stavanger, Norway.....We've always been in touch, but the past few years it's been sporadic...hopefully we'll stay more in touch....so anyway she has re-taken up knitting!  She is not working at the moment, after working 50-60 hours a week the past couple of years....so she made some slippers and is going to send me the yarn and pattern to also make some..these are hers...
and I got her to join Ravelry..she had never heard of it....

Now I consider blogging my present way of having penpals! So I consider you all penpals..

On to my work for the week...if you read my Friday post, you'll know I finished two pair of socks this week! Yesterday I finished the first of my H's Everyday Socks....they come in one size and really are too big for me....I have skinny calves and skinny ankles....so I am learning to readjust the patterns for me...I figure each time I finish one, I've learned something....I'm also thinking I need to get some thin elastic and weave it through my cuffs....that'll help keep my socks up....I did start the second sock..

Yesterday I also finished a pair of fingerless gloves for my swap partner...she's kind of particular, so I hope she likes them...the wool is a bit itchy, but hopefully will soften...I can wear them, no problem..but the Hubs wouldn't be able to...

I'm really trying to finish up some WIPs..I'd like to start the new year with a shorter list...and actually cast on/start some of the knit/crochet projects I have waiting in the wings...

I am having a problem with my fingers..they have been cramping really badly..so I need to start rotating projects and not just sock knitting with the tiny needles..

That's it..I hope you all have a wonderful week and a fantastic Thanksgiving, if you are American..and I'll see you back here next week....

Socks Friday!!!!!!

So I have two finishes this week...socks...yeah!  Both pair were made in about a month....I'm on a sock roll....

Name: Do Zombies Skype?
Pattern:  Simple Skyp socks
Yarn: Holiday Yarn Flock Sock in Zombie Romance
I changed the length of the heel flap.  They are still a bit big around the foot.  Also I may need to put elastic in my cuffs, as I can't seem to get my cuffs to stay up...or I need a less stretchy cuff...But I love the pattern.  I will make it again...or try the Skyp ones...

and...

Name: October Fire
Pattern: Vanilla Latte
Yarn: Friday Studios Monday in Girl on Fire
Again I shorted the heelflap.  The leg is also very long in these...The toe increase is a bit funky, my fault, not the pattern.  Also I was suppose to knit a row between each pattern row and I forgot, so these are very stretchy...

I'll be wearing these today to go watch Mockinjay...

So that is it for me today..head on over to these places to checkout other projects..

Stitch Along Wednesday

Good morning from an early, very cold morning on the east coast of the US....thankfully we haven't received the snow that poor upstate New York has received..it's crazy!
photo belongs to Jeremiah William

I have been socksing.....yep...knitting socks...I finished one pair Sunday night...that I'm going to wear today....

and I am thisclose to finishing a second pair....
See that?  It's the toe....I need to finish the toe....I don't take any crafting to work with me...as I have so much to do...and I only have a 30 minute lunch..and I eat...but I'm so tempted to take it today...

What have you been crafting?????  Join up below in the link...and leave a comment if you would like...I've been disabling moderation for the Wednesday linkups....check out the other links and I'll see you next Wednesday!

YOP #46

This past week, I reconnected with some former students on Facebook.  They are about 21 now...it was great talking to some of them...I had them for two years in second and third grade. I never friend them...really who wants an old teacher friending you...but if they ask to friend me then I will..Facebook is interesting that way....easier to reconnect with people....

On to the knitting/crocheting....I actually went to Knit Night on Thursday...I'm going to try to make it most weeks...this week I can't as it is Parent Conference night...Mon, Tues and Wed are all half days for Parent Conferences...
sorry...got distracted...so anyway I worked on my Outlander Shawl...I am almost done with clue 3.  I think there are 6 clues....and there is where my Do Zombies Skype? socks were....

And the big news is that on Saturday night I finished them!  So I'll probably wear them watching The Walking Dead tonight!

Yeah...now to work on my Girl of Fire socks for the movie on Friday....I also picked up my H's Everyday Socks socks last night.  I had ripped out the heel flap...I am realizing that I need to make a much shorter heel flap than I have previously...

Indie Designer Gift Along

So have you heard about this?  It started on Thursday and runs until next Friday, November 21.

I am not a designer (it involves the dreaded math word), but I'm all about supporting the indie person.  You all know how much I support indie dyers, but I also buy single patterns too..maybe not as much as yarn, but enough..and I've purchased some books too....

Go check them out...it's 25% off each design....I've already bought several (pictures are all property of the designer)

Slim_rav_2_small2 Clare Devine - who wouldn't want rainbow baby legwarmers?

Img_1286_small2 Michelle May - a friend expressed an interest in some boot toppers

Img_9772-001_small2 Julia Noskova - cuz that is cool and will be warm!

I have also favorited a bunch to go back and take a look and decide which ones I'm going to buy now....I've only gone through 4 of the 12 pages so far!

Also Knitvent is having a promotion until tomorrow, November 16.  If you purchase the ebook, you get last year's Curious Knitvent 2013 for FREE!!!!!!!!!  Go check out the sale...support those indie crafters and designers....

Go...go now!

A Friday Finish

Not much of an exciting Friday Finish...my sister asked me for fingerless mitts last year and I finally got around to making them...nothing fancy...She wanted black, but I found this yarn which has some shots of blue and grey in it....so I used that...

They will be warm, as it's a chunky yarn.

I'm also wearing my Sockhead hat today...I showed it awhile ago, but it was way too big..I have since realized I am a loose knitter....so I folded it and stuck a shawl pin in..what do you think?

It's a bit bulky on that side, but shrug it works....

So I'll be linking up with Chrisknits, Creative Friday and Wisdom in Wonder ....Have an awesome Friday...this weekend I plan to finish two pair of socks!  woo-hoo!

Stitch Along Wednesday

So I'll be hosting a Wednesday link-up and Chrisknits will be hosting a Friday link-up for finishes.  I did have some communication with Tami and she is not sure when she'll be back to posting link-ups.  So here goes....
I don't know how to make it a linkback (I do for me, but not how to create the code for you)...but figured I'd try making some kind of banner...since I'm obsessed with socks right now...I used the last pair I finished...so if you want to grab it for your blog..feel free....

This week I have mainly been working on my two pair of socks....I have one sock of each finished...It helps having two different patterns on the go, as I like to switch between the two when I get bored...it seems to have kept me on target with them...I also frogged back the heel flap on two other socks, as I think they will be too big on me...

So sock 1 of October Fire is done...I was on the second blue stripe Tuesday night.

My Do Zombies Skype?  I have turned the heel of the second sock and am working on the gusset.  These are becoming a favorite...I love this pattern....and the yarn is fabulous...

I also pulled out my Outlander MKAL shawl.  I added the last two orange sections.  I had to go back and drop some stitches to fix them...scary.....they were purl and needed to be knit stitches...These are Lorna's Laces specially dyed colors for this MKAL...and I adore the green...like the orange, but adore the green....

I also finished up a pair of fingerless gloves for my sister and started another pair for a swap....

As it is Tuesday night, I am off to watch Agents of Shield and DVR Supernatural....see ya' in the morning!

Please leave a comment, if you feel so inclined...thanks!  Anyone who visits, I will return the visit and comment....

Veteran's Day 2014

So this week, around the world, people give thanks to the many veterans who have put their lives on the line to ensure freedom for others....we should all say thank you...

I am proud to say that my family has had many veterans.  The first one I know about is my great-great grandfather on my paternal side.  His name was Daniel Scoville and he served during The Spanish-American War, in the Navy.

My great-grandfather (maternal), Francois Martin,  served during World War I

My Pépé, Joseph LaChappelle, served during World War II, although I have no pictures.

My father served in the 25th Infantry during the Vietnam War
my father was very conflicted about his time in Vietnam, and it added to his demons. My mother says, he came back a changed man.  I would think most veterans who have served in combat did come back changed...how could you not?

My uncle made a career in the Marines..he retired awhile back...
My cousin, also made a career, but in the Army.  Both he and his wife served.

My brother also served.  He was in the Army during The Persian Gulf, but he was never sent to combat.
My sister served in the National Guard, my brother-in-law in the Navy..and it goes on and on....if we didn't have these people willing to put their lives on the line...we may not have our freedom...thank a vet today...buy a poppy....be grateful that they were willing.....

Year of Projects #45

Yesterday I had a bit of project ADD....just could not figure out what to work on...so, in that pile, are two socks...from different pairs, a pair of crocheted fingerless gloves, my Outlander MKAL shawl, my "Outlander" cowl, what you don't see is the other bag with the yarn for the other fingerless mitts...

I did fix the mistakes in the Outlander shawl...crocheted on the cowl until I ran out of yarn and was too lazy to go get the next ball....completed 1/2 pairs of fingerless mitts I need to get done...and finally picked up the Girl on Fire sock and knit on that until too tired....I'm pretty much on the toe now....

Yesterday I also stopped up at my LYS to pick up yarn for the mitts...and picked up a skein of "spatter-dash" dyed yarn for myself....itching to cast on! But will try to finish something else first...

Today I have to work on report cards, do some correcting..and then I'm free to craft again...This month, we have no full weeks of school....love having random days off....

Friday Finishes

Again, I'm going to post a link, if anyone wants to link up their finishes....

So I've got a few things to share....I'm really trying to finish up my WIPs..

First up...the Turtleneck Shawlette...I love this!  I wore it yesterday...
The pattern is from the Knit Simple Fall 2014 magazine...I used three colors of Kraemer Yarns Perfection...the pattern called for two colors...

Also I pulled out something I made several years ago to wear on Wednesday...I'm just going to share it, as it was done before I was blogging about projects...my Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat..
That's a whole lot of giant granny squares made from big ole acrylic skeins.  I think there is some Lion Brand in there, maybe some Red Heart...I think the purple is an actual wool blend...It's fun to wear...

I also want to share the Outlander Claire cowl I made for a swap partner in Plymouth Yarn Baby Alpaca Grande...so soft and squooshy.....

I'm making another for myself in a green....

Last night I picked up my Outlander shawl..I was doing the MKAL with Jimmy Beans and then got distracted with other shiny things...actually swaps..I was in several...

as I seem to be on a roll to finish up WIPs...I'll keep at it...the only thing I need to start is another swap gift and I have a couple of Christmas things to do...

I hope everyone has a fantastic day...I will be tired, as I did not sleep well after 3 this morning...

I'm gonna link up with Wisdom in Wonder and Creative Friday

I'm providing a link to those that used to do FO Friday.....so link up...join the parties...

Stitch Along Wednesday

So Tami has not posted in 5 weeks....I'm hoping everything is okay..but I'm going to provide a linkup until she gets back..I didn't want to take her name, so I went with Stitch Along....Anyone can link up, regardless of the type of project....so here goes mine...I've worked on several things this week....

Yesterday, I came home from a workshop and was able to sit on my front porch swing and knitted a bit...in New England in November...very unusual....we've had a cycle of warm weather, cold weather hitting us...cold weather comes back on Thursday.....
I also alternated this sock, Do Zombies Skype?,  with another this past weekend....
Last night I worked on it some more and got to about 3/4 of the leg done...

The other socks are my Girl on Fire socks that I need to finish for the Mockinjay movie release...

Also night I also worked on my Turtleneck Capelet....I am to the turtleneck section, another couple hours and it'll be done...maybe for Friday...
Sorry, kinda blurry....

Yesterday I had a workshop and took my Outlander cowl along...yep, put in two stitches and then was busy to the end of the workshop...

I am also kind of scattered with my reading...I'm alternating between a couple of books right now...

So what are you working on now???  Please link up below..

Travel Tuesday - Niagara Falls 2014

Back in August, we took a trip with a friend's family to Niagara Falls.  We were going on to Toronto and they were heading to North Dakota...but we stopped for the day together...it was fabulous.

I had been to the Falls about 25 years ago with a former boyfriend...wow..has it changed!

Getting across the border was CRAZY!!!  Over an hour in line! And then finding parking....we ended up parking far away from each other...and I ended up with a parking ticket....oh well....

It was beautiful day and we rode The Hornblower Boat ride, which replaces the Maid of the Mist on the Canadian side...

And after the ride...

Then we walked around for a bit..had some lunch...and said our goodbyes....we headed out east to Hamilton, on a long back way..as there was an accident that closed the main highway...and they headed out to the west for North Dakota...
All in all, a wonderful day trip....
